I got a really great deal on that camera I wanted (WITH a waterproof housing, see above) on eBay. My awesome grandma, who passed away in November, left me some money – so this was my splurge. I did smart stuff with the rest, I promise! This is the nicest camera I’ve ever had! I know people who really care about photography will laugh at my enthusiasm (this is not an SLR), but I don’t ever want to carry a camera bag, lenses or whatever else so I think this is all I will ever need. Also, I’m pretty sure I am unable to appreciate the subtle differences between quality photography and UNQUALITY. I want to try out the underwater, but it is winter. I think I would get in trouble at the YMCA. Bathtub maybe?

I just learned you can now search the LIFE photo archive through google. Above we have Blondie “The House Lion” and Bridgette Bardot.

It feels wonderful, for once, to be so unoriginal, to be lost in this enormous planetary crowd and to share this crowd’s wishes, its excitement, its probable coming delight.

Poladroid is a new mac app that converts your digital photos into digital polaroids. I know it’s no substitution for the physical thing, but fun nonetheless! Above is Mike’s Halloween costume, he was a zombie mime! I was a black panther, it didn’t turn out so great, I’ll prepare better next year. Annie is here for voting tomorrow morning, here is a “poladroid” of her and Mackie from the summer.

One reason concerts are alive and records are dead is that there’s a new value in things which can’t be uploaded as digital content to the internet. I call this phenomenon “the post-bit atom”. It also explains why the art market is booming. Art and music have become social occasions. An art opening or a concert (or, even better, an art opening with a concert included) is a chance for people who spend all day in front of computer screens to see their fellow human beings and share an intense, loud, colourful, real experience with them.

Art and music are also “distinction machines”: efficient ways for people to sum up complex clusters of values — social, political, aesthetic and ethical — and connect with like-minded souls. None of this is going to become less important any time soon.

Came across Square America today. The (seemingly) thousands of photos are organized in a variety of ways, so you can spend a lot of time here – like a library.

I chose these especially for Thanksgiving.

I will probably buy it again, the photos are really nice.
